About This Recipe: As far as I know, this is the basic hoe cake recipe that was cooked over an open fire by slaves and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

Ingredients

Corn Meal

1/2 teaspoon salt per cup of corn meal

pinch of black pepper per cup of corn meal

Boiling water

Directions

Mix salt, pepper, and corn meal

Pour enough boiling water over corn meal mixture to make a fairly thick batter that holds together

Drop tablespoons of mixture into skillet with a little hot oil

Fry until golden brown and done in the middle
